Our History

In 1967 we got our start. It was not a fairy tale story about a rich business man whom saw an opportunity to capitalize on the rising concerns of substance abuse. It is a story of a young man who had it all, fame, fortune and an exponential amount of opportunities. But nothing seemed to satisfy him but drinking. He eventually entered priesthood without a drop of alcohol around and eight years later became a highly educated priest. Shortly after he relapsed and began drinking. He was sent away to Guest House a recovery center for priest. He there began his personal recovery. He later on found himself visiting a newly established Sacred Heart in Detroit, Michigan. There were forty men living in this run down old school building. Their spirits were crushed like his had been and they had nothing. The priest now knew he was home. He ate, laughed, shared and cried with these men. It took a few years to transform this facility into a functional residential treatment center.

As you can see since our modest start we have experienced incredible growth. Our staff still eat, laugh, share and cry with the population that we serve. Our population has just grown larger, along with our services and specialty programs. We evolve as our clients needs do. SHRC is now a nationally recognized, non-denominational, behavioral health service provider.
